However, there are some sections where you can learn the technique of rappelling.

Pools of water along the trail provide excellent opportunities for dips of varying heights and are especially pleasant during hot summer days. The surrounding vegetation is lush and offers a pleasant contrast to the grey rocks of the canyon.

Canyoning Tuscany – La Pendolina

The Pendolina is a famous waterfall of about 70 meters in the heart of Garfagnana in the valley opposite that of Rio Selvano. The route features what is surely the highest and most impressive rope rappel in Tuscany. The excursion begins with a safety briefing and the distribution of the equipment provided by the guide. After a fairly strenuous 45-minute walk through ancient chestnut groves and pastures, the starting point of the canyoning trail is reached.

Path Characteristics

The trail takes us to the final part of the stream that gives rise to the Pendolina waterfall. A series of small rappels allow us to brush up on rope descent technique and review some of the more technical aspects. The path leads us fairly quickly and smoothly to the final chaining. Suddenly the descent opens on the final great vertical: a rope descent of about 70 meters in full vacuum that brings us to the end of the descent .

The route is certainly marked strongly by the large final rappel, the high point of an otherwise easy descent. This waterfall requires some experience in rope rappelling so as to enjoy it serenely and safely.

Canyoning Toscana Pendolina

La Pendolina in brief

  • Duration: 5-6 hours

Because of the technical complexity of such a high rappel, the course is reserved for people who already have rope abseiling experience and can handle the adrenaline rush given by the void. The techniques and materials chosen by the guide combined with your awareness are a guarantee of an experience that is certainly adrenaline-pumping but lived safely.

In conclusion, La Pendolina offers a somewhat uneven journey but with an absolutely unique and memorable climax. Not a very long descent but one that will indelibly mark your memories


Canyoning Tuscany – Torrente Ania

If you want to practice Canyoning in Garfagnana, you cannot miss the Ania Creek.
One of the most fascinating places in Tuscany to practice canyoning. Located near the famous Barga, this creek offers a complete experience combining adventure, natural beauty and fun. The excursion begins with a detailed briefing on safety and canyoning techniques, followed by the distribution of equipment. Once ready, a walk of about 40 minutes takes us to the creek’s entry point, where the adventure begins.

Path Characteristics

The descent of Ania Torrent features a series of natural obstacles that make it a complete canyoning experience. The constant presence of water makes it one of the most watery descents in Tuscany. There are several waterfalls, some of them up to 15 meters high, that require abseiling by rope. In addition, the creek features a magnificent water-carved toboggan that allows for a fun slide.

The trail takes place completely within limestone walls beautifully sculpted by water. The limestone is very white and has extremely characteristic flint veins.

  • Distance: About 1.5 km
  • Duration: 4 hours

Due to the aquatic nature of the descent, it is essential to undertake the descent only with the proper flow rate. The guide will know the best time to tackle a sporty but not dangerous descent. Some rope rappels in fact pass under the jet of the waterfall and thus require special attention and management.
